Our Trip to the Aquarium

Today we went on a trip to the Aquarium. This was to give us real-life experience for our next topic after half term- seaside and holidays! We are going to use this experience for our writing this week. We had lots of interesting conversations and some fantastic questions for the aquarium staff.

Measuring Capacity and Volume

This week we have been measuring capacity and volume. Today we learnt that volume is how much water is in a container, rather than how much the container can hold. We used spoons and cups to practise filling our containers to a specific brief. We filled them until they were full, half full, nearly full, nearly empty and empty. Some of us were even able to read how many milliliters of water was in each container.

Measuring Height

Today we were introduced to our new maths topic- measuring height and length. We discussed our understanding of the word “measure” and of what height is. Some of us even remembered measuring our height in Reception. In groups, we measured all of the children in the class against our height chart. We found that Kirstian is the tallest and Jennifer is the shortest!

Growth

This week we started our new Growth topic. We planted seeds in egg cartons. When the seeds begin to grow we will transfer them in to flower beds. We planted: sunflowers, peas, basil, chives, and spring onion. We are very much looking forward to eating what we grow! Daniel said: “The soil is cold.” Lauryn said “I hope the bees will come.” Shilaah said “I like holding the seeds.”

Red Nose Day

This year our year 6 teacher, Ms Wheatle, organised a fantastic Red Nose Day! Throughout the day we participated in lots of fun activities. We got our nails painted, took part in egg and spoon races, dressed up in silly clothes, wrote and told jokes, flipped bottles and played football! We absolutely loved it and we smiled all day! Crystal said “my favourite bit was when we got to do limbo in dance.” Raphel said “I played football and Mekhi scored many goals.” Shilaah-Raine said “I liked it when we got to do our nails.” What a wonderful day- thank you Ms Wheatle!

Building Castles

Year 1s topic this term is Castles. This week we have been making our own castles out of junk modelling material. We have fantastic ideas for our castles and spent a long time picking out exactly the shape and sizes of the boxes we need. Some of us have made drawbridges (with real string to pull to open!). Some of us have made towers (“So that we can see the baddies.”) Some of us have even begun to make people to go inside our castles. We are looking forward to painting our castles and will update the blog with the final products!

Counting in 2s!

IMG_1406

Today we began counting in 2s. We learnt a trick to help us- we can count in 1s like we know how and say every other number in a whisper. We put this to the test today playing a game in the playground. We were in teams and each team had to throw beanbags in to the hoop. Every beanbag that landed in the hoop earnt the team 2 points. We took it in turns to be score-keeper. Every time we scored 2 points we had to add on 2 more. In the end we chanted our score charts: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 (some of us even went further.)

Everybody Reading In Class

IMG_1315

This week year one had a trial run of ERIC (Everybody Reading in Class). Everybody in the classroom (including the teachers!) were reading their books. We were allowed to sit wherever and however we want. Some of us chose to sit on chairs, some of us layed on the floor, some of us chose cushions. We read whichever book we wanted for 15 minutes. We really enjoyed ERIC and we keep asking our teacher when we can do it again!
